I can’t quit you.

Going through Wyoming today I spotted in the wild – a wolf. A first for me. I’ve seen them close up, got wolf kisses from Orca, seen many wolves over the years but never until today just out and about and BLAM .. a wolf. It was life affirming. I have spent a good deal of my life speaking out for wolves, blogging about wolves and trying to educate many about these wonderful creatures and today going down I-80 in Wyoming I spot one of these shy but magnificent critters looking off to the horizon standing by a creek. It was picture postcard beautiful I tell you. I only wish my camera loaded fast enough to snap a picture.

After the wolf we saw scads and scads of Pronghorn Antelope and a large cloud of Yellow Headed Black Birds. But that one glimpse of that perfect predator was enough to make this whole trip worth while. It was in a word … magical.

Just as I was pondering the wolf and how lucky I am to have seen it we came to Laramie, WY … all I could think about was Matthew Shepard and his horrible killing.

What is with people – are they just not evolved. They kill off beautiful creatures because they are afraid of them. It makes no sense to me. I feel like grabbing them and shaking them. Who knows what Matthew Shepard might have done with his life- he would be 33 this year. We’ll never know because 2 homophobic boys scared of their own shadow lashed out and took his life in the most inhumane and violent way. It made me sadder.

Sad to know that wolf probably won’t make it through the year before some local with a gun and an attitude snuffs out her life and sad that I seem to be surrounded by the ignorance of man – so much that it pains me.

I spent some time away from my passion trying to get my Fibromyalgia under control but after today – that stops now. I am not willing to sell myself or my passion short for a little comfort when it eats away at my soul. So to the wolves of the world I say – you once again have my voice — and to the wolf killers of the world I say — good luck in getting me out of your head.

On Facebook there is a program called “Save a Dog” and you can virtually foster a shelter dog and help find it a forever home. You earn points for activities and those points add up to money donated to shelters to help feed these dogs. Very Cool.

If you haven’t already I urge you to join. For now check out the dogs at Orange County NC Shelter that available to go home.

If you are on Facebook you should be no stranger to the countless apps and games. I find most annoying but there is one that I use every day and recommend. Save a Dog where you earn points that go to feeding pets in shelters. Help save a life. Adopt. There is also a Save a Cat app.

Ban Live Bait Dog Training

The IDNR has decided to continue to allow the bloodsport of using dogs to tear apart and kill coyotes in Indiana. The two petitions that Ban Live Bait Dog Training submitted in April of this year have been sent back to the INRC for a hearing on Nov.17, 2009 at the Ft. Harrison State Park at 10am. Contact jkane@nrc.IN.gov Sandra Jensen, Hearing Officer 1-317-232-4229 Jennifer Kane 1-317-232-4699

Please start making comments to these contacts. You don’t have to be from Indiana to comment. Letters to editors of IN newspapers would also be helpful.

Check out Indiana Coyote Rescue Center for more information on the coyote in Indiana and thanks to CeAnn for bringing this to my attention.

Michael Vick divides a nation | Dog Time

You have said it better than I could. Vick doesn’t think this punishment has been enough – at least that is what he said. Whether he believes that or was just saying what his PR team wrote – who knows.

I think what shocks me more than one man’s wretched abusive behavior against dogs (VICK) is the support and comments that others have made in his defense.

It is only a dog? What will you say when those who only harm animals turn their violence to humans?

Dogs have the emotional age of a 2 year oldchild … how would you feel if someone took it upon themselves to pit fight 2 year olds to the death. Electrocute them, shoot them in the head.

Dogs are sentient (thinking / feeling) creatures – just because some people act as if humans are the only species on the planet doesn’t make it true.

Busy Freakin Day

I got up and made breakfast for the family. Then MIL and I went out to shop and lunch — girl stuff.

I had 10 inches +/- of my hair cut off to donate to “Locks of Love” – came back to the house, cooked out with the family.

Then after a little more shopping with the MIL came home again and vegged. After LK and his brother decided they were done tearing up GH:Metallica, Mitchell heading into the house. I thought I heard LK wheezing. Then Mitchell said through the window “Hey, what is this sound?”

I stepped outside into the darkness and heard for the first time in the wild (sub-burb of Morehead, KY isn’t all that wild) … the chatter of a lone coyote. Sounded like it was moving between about three yards just across the street.

So I did what any insane person would do at 10 pm on a Wednesday night on a quiet street full of conservative Kentuckians — I raised my head back and a I howled. When I was done I heard yips and barks then one mournful howl — then all of the dogs on the street when nuts.

It was AWESOME.

Great freakin’ day!!

The coyote headed out of the area – I only hope to a less populated area — people around here love to shoot at critters. = (

STAR Saving the Animals of Rowan.

If you can at all help this rescue out — they are in desperate need of homes and funds. It is a small rescue in Morehead, KY — there are only a handful of caring animal people in that area and more than their share of people who just don’t care enough to give a damn whether an dog lives or dies. It is a sad, cruel rural county for animals to get dumped. Julia and the few others do their very best to help them out — but they need a helping hand too.

Do what you can to save a life!!

Thanks!

bird watching

Just about 10 minutes ago I opened up the back door to let the dogs out and guess what I saw … a Bald Eagle. Yep, sitting on my fence, eating dinner. Unfortunately I had the door open before I saw him and he dropped his meal and flew off into the neighbors tree — watching us the whole time. LK went out to the yard with a plastic bag and tossed his din din over the fence so the dogs wouldn’t get it.
It makes all of fixit shit better now I have eagles in my backyard. Fuck that is cool!!
Now I gotta get LK to set me up a killer webcam … and I am going to get my minolta and try to catch some pictures.
Thanks to Aunt Pat for helping me figure out what kind of raptor this was. I knew he was too big to be a hawk but his feathers weren’t defined like a Bald .. I thought maybe Golden .. but it turns out .. was an immature bald eagle. KICK ASS!! = )
I found a photo of the juvenile bald eagle by Francois Bourgeot if you want to see what one looks like.
